Expertise
Douglas Kiang has taught for more than 35 years, and lately much of his teaching is about deciding when AI helps and when it gets in the way. He teaches computer science at Menlo School in Silicon Valley, where he also taught Literature in the Age of AI and leads faculty professional development on AI. His new book, Hands on the Wheel: A Human-Centered Guide to AI in the Classroom, grew out of watching students and teachers wrestle with a question most working adults now face: which parts of my job should I hand to a machine, and which parts are the reason I do this work? Douglas is an Apple Distinguished Educator and a former Research Fellow at MIT's Teaching Systems Lab. He co-authored Apple's Develop in Swift curriculum and helped develop the AP Computer Science Principles course. He speaks to schools and conferences in the US and Asia about using AI on purpose, and he brings a practical streak and a sense of humor (he once asked several chatbots to plan his retirement and got a different answer from each one).
