Prenatal Yoga: Yoga and Fertility

Prenatal Yoga - Yoga and Fertility

Many moms-to-be do prenatal yoga to connect with the miracle of pregnancy, and for the benefits it brings to the baby in utero. Studies are now showing that yoga can also benefit women who are not yet pregnant and trying to conceive.

Yoga and improved fertility

The Yoga Journal published When you Want to Have a Baby But Can’t that communicates the struggle and frustration of couples trying to have a baby. While the conception process can be emotionally and financially draining, there is some good news–yoga has shown promise in improving fertility.

A program by the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, incorporated stress reduction practices including yoga and meditation, group discussions, and changes in diet, among the women experiencing infertility and saw positive results. Dr. Rahul Sachdev explains, “Couples saw a 50 percent fertility rate within one year of finishing the program...regardless of the cause of the woman’s inability to conceive, participants were helped in encouragingly high numbers.”

A separate study conducted in 2000 by Harvard Medical School researcher Alice Domar, Ph.D showed that women who participated in a program including relaxation and yoga, were nearly three times more likely to get pregnant than women who didn’t go through her program.

Prenatal Yoga after you conceive

Once you get pregnant science confirms the benefits of yoga for moms-to be and their developing babies. FitPregnancy highlights ten benefits of prenatal yoga for the mom, including relieving tension in the upper and lower back, hips, neck and shoulders, calming the nervous system, improving circulation, and developing stamina, strength and balance.

And it benefits the baby too! Practicing prenatal yoga has been shown to reduce preterm labor and improve baby’s birth weight.

Finally, the Windsor Star’s article on yoga benefits for moms-to-be cites an International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics study which found that, on average, stress was reduced, 32 percent in pregnant women who practiced yoga. And this stress reduction benefits both mom and her baby

So whether you’re a mom-to-be or a hope-to-be-mom, you could experience tremendous benefits from practicing yoga before you conceive and prenatal yoga after.
