Before any formal training & the restaurants where she would work, Chef Jennifer Cho began her culinary education at home, meticulously folding dumplings and cleaning mung bean sprouts with her mother. That past connection to food would be lost (but only temporarily!) as Jennifer pursued a teaching career first. While she was completing her Ph.D. in English, it dawned on her that she loved food and cooking in a way that she could never love books and abstract theories. It wasn’t just that food kept her alive - - in the process of cooking for herself and for others, Jennifer experienced how food could be powerfully creative, restorative, and connective.
This recognition motivated Jennifer to transition out of academia and into the culinary world. While attending the Classic Culinary Arts program at The French Culinary Institute (now the International Culinary Center), she completed an externship at Annisa, a one-star Michelin restaurant helmed by Chef Anita Lo. From there, Jennifer relocated to San Francisco (for a long-distance love!), and worked as a chef de partie at Chef Daniel Patterson’s Coi, a two-star Michelin restaurant.
Upon leaving Coi, Jennifer founded j-bites, a private chef & boutique catering service that has nourished many bellies in the Bay area since 2011. While she misses “working the line” at times, Jennifer loves collaborating with her clients to make their food dreams come true. The everyday kitchen - where families and friends gather - is Jennifer’s home turf, and she’s excited to share her love for cooking on Grokker.
