In Dee-Dee’s words: “As someone who has made a huge change in their relationship to substances — and was once misdiagnosed by the mental health system — I know how hard change really is, for nearly everyone. My mission is to help people find their own path forward, because what works for one person may be the opposite of what works for another.
I also work to end the stigma around drug use. The truth is, we're all drug users in some form — coffee, sugar, a drink to unwind, medication to cope. Humans have used substances for at least 15,000 years; it's time we're honest about that instead of pretending otherwise. Since substance use isn't disappearing, let’s shift from demanding abstinence to acknowledging reality: drugs work — that's why people use them.
Too many people feel unworthy of even trying to change because of the drugs they use even though more humans die from alcohol use than all other drugs combined, except tobacco. I know that everyone deserves to be seen as human first, and met with compassion, kindness, and respect. And all of us benefit from examining our relationship with substances in a space that's open, honest, and judgment-free.”
