Vinyasa yoga refers to a wide range of yoga classes, and is by far the most popular offering in the United States. In Sanskrit the term vinyasa translates to “connection” which is celebrated through the connection between poses (asanas) and breath. In vinyasa yoga, poses move the practitioner through a series of movements often described as a smooth dance-like flow. This is where the term vinyasa flow or flow yoga comes from.
What to expect from vinyasa yoga
Vinyasa yoga allows for plenty of interpretation, but your average class will likely include plenty of sun salutation warrior movements. Expect movement between the poses, and not just to hold stretches. Depending on the teacher, the pace of the class may vary. Power yoga is a form of vinyasa yoga, but expect the classes to move at a much faster pace. Some vinyasa flow classes are taught in heated studios.
History of vinyasa yoga
In the 19th century, vinyasa flow yoga developed as an offshoot of ashtanga yoga, which is more controlled and methodical. Vinyasa yoga incorporates the postures taught in ashtanga yoga, but does not mandate the they be performed in the exact same order.
Benefits of vinyasa yoga
Both the mind and body benefit from practicing vinyasa yoga. The standing poses, backbends and arm balances practiced in inyasa yoga help to build strength and tone lean muscle throughout the body. The constant flow in vinyasa yoga helps bring oxygen to all parts of the body and improve mobility by stretching and elongating muscles.
What you need to practice vinyasa yoga
You don’t need much to practice vinyasa yoga, which is why it is a great option for doing yoga at home. All you really need is a yoga mat. Some practices call for a block or a strap, but you can always substitute with books or a belt you have lying around the house. In particularly strenuous flows it’s a good idea to have a water bottle near by to keep you hydrated. Wear comfortable clothes that you can move in, and that you don’t mind working up a sweat in.
